How's your Live 8 TV coverage?
Reader Comments
(Page 4)62. The MTV/VH1 broadcast of Live8 Was shameful. Cutting bands like The freaking Who off in midstream is absolutely shameful! Good GOD they cut them off like 30 seconds before the greatest scream ever recorded in rock-n-roll by Roger Daltrey!!! I managed to hurry to the internet to catch it and MAN does he still have it!!!
But that's not the most shameful part. I hope to GOD that they're going to donate every red freaking cent that they made in advertising dollars during the concert to the very charity that they were slaughtering with their manic and A.D.D. coverage. I think I saw more commercials during that concert than I ever have! DO THE RIGHT THING MTV - you bunch of loser freaks who wouldn't know music if it bit you on the A$$!
My two cents worth.

63. I'm going to be watching the ABC west coast program soon, to see if they manage to block out the f-bomb this time. I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that they will because some puritans probably called them before.

64. I don't know why MTV and VH1 weren't showing full performances, because CTV here in Canada was showing extensive coverage since early this morning - including full f-bombs by Madonna, the Who and others. Although, as I recall, MuchMusic in Canada had very similar sporadic coverage for the big SARS concert in Toronto a couple of years ago (or so I heard - I was at the concert!), so maybe there's something to that DVD rights issue.

65. CTV's coverage was terrible! The whole day I was sitting and waiting for Pink Floyd and not only do they not show it live but they cut it out after two songs!!!! The Tragically Hip, were performing in Barrie so CTV switched to it and while a good band they are not PINK FLOYD!!! Now I am watching the CTV Live 8 Highlight and they only showed Money before cutting away.....those no good so and so's

67. MTV/VH1 what happened to each station showing different songs that way we get to see it all? Too many commercials and way too many artists were cut off before their songs were over. Too much of the VJ's talking and not enough music! Not to mention here in Philly we didn't get to see Toby Keith or Keith Urban or Def Leppard at all....!!!!!Very Frustrating.
Live Aid was much much better. I had to watch the local news to see clips of people I didn't even know were there. Very Disappointed. I think it was a great awareness tool but more of the actual songs and artists should've been shown.

68. MTVVH1 coverage blew. they should have dedicated channel to a few locations and the the ither the rest. What they did though was crap.

69. Canadian coverage has been great (I live 20 miles south of the border in the US). At least it was until the Canadian show started (Brian Adams, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Cochran....ugh!) At least they showed full sets from U2, Coldplay, Dido, Die Toten Hosen, Green Day, Elton John and a few others...I hope this comes out on DVD!

70. Consider yourselves lucky, down here in Australia, unless you have cable...you don't get anything. I couldn't watch the streaming feeds from the US...they were constantly buffering themselves. And to top it off the 9 network here only showed a 2-hour London-centric show of Live 8 performances. It really sucked...no Destiny's Child, Duran Duran, Green Day, Faith Hill, Wil Smith, Black Eyed Peas, Dido, Bon Jovi, and Neil Young...among A LOT of others. I hope there is going to be a huge DVD like Live Aid otherwise we really missed out.

72. Will there be a Live 8 DVD??
Posted at 5:24PM on Jul 4th 2005 by jan
73. Exactly. The Canadian coverage was atrocious (with their goofy behind the scenes reporters like Tanya Kim, etc.).
Ben Mulroney never should have hosted the coverage. He said Audioslave was performing their breakthrough hit "Black Hole Sun" (in reality a Sound Garden cover) and thought that Bitter Sweet Symphony was a Richard Ashcroft song, when it was in reality a Verve tune.
And what was the point of having the split screens throughout the day, when it was simply showing what Canadians were missing from the more energetic London, Philly, Rome, Paris, etc. shows?
Instead of filling the hour with 12 minutes of commercials (16 minutes during the primetime recap, as stated in their press release), they could have been airing international footage with that ad time.
You should see the number of complaints on the CTV forums.
Thank goodness for AOL. And I thought they were DOA back after the year 2000.

76. A Really Big Show ala Ed Sullivan...
Sir Paul and his mates Ringo, John, and George and all the professional people there.
Gave all of you "A Really Big Show"..as Ed Sullivan was fond of saying..
if you wanted to see the music you had to be there..
mtv and vh1 did a great job of getting sight and sound (an exceptional good sound mix) to us who could not attend...all the mixing and editing great job.
this is about raising awarness that people in the world starve every day for no reason..that some one is afraid to give food, medicine, shelter to help another fellow human being on the planet
this is about raising awareness...the people who put this show rehearsed for hours....plaanned for several weeks..
Give them a hand for "A really Big Show"..very well done!!!!!!!!!!
i will pay to download a performance since the money seems to go to get food and medicine for the people in Africa...
Seems a "splendid time was had by all"
good show Sir Paul, Bob, Elton and the entire cast and crew!!!!!
seems like the legend of king arthur lives, the freedom lovers of the usa and other people are saying there is enough food...no one should starve or be ill anymore..............
thank you mr sullivan for an idea wll developed..
if you have never seen an ed sullivan show it was about variety and the world !!!!!!!!!!!!
peace love harmony

stop complaining response.stopping bootlegs
my internet was not that great as yours...so my only source was tv....
also they are trying to prevent people bootlegging the peformances and selling them for profit that does not get to Afica...
it is their music performance to sell to raise money to feed people...
i am rewatching my mtv version of floyd playing again
such great clear sound ...only can tv do this..sight and sound...
give mtv / vh1 a hand
support the musicians rights to own their songs / performances which they donated..
it is what they have to sell to get money to send to afica to end poverty ..

RE: quit your whining
to matsfanatic...and others
you don't get it bob and paul and company planned the whole thing to be that way...they are very aware of how vh1 and mtv work.....
even the aol world stage coverage...took you to another spot in the world when a particular peformer was appearing...
it was a planned tv show....start to finish
be feakin happy tv was invented or it would all still be on radio...
john would have said "sod off you complaining (pain in the arse) b*****ds...pauly did a grand job of the beatles playing from hyde park...the single with proceeds going to help the african cause was available for purchase 1 hour after Paul and U2 performed
"Sgt Pepper's"...direct to disc recording....and ready for download for a small fee.....
i was lucky enough to see the original jimi hendrix experience...the 1968 version of the new yardbirds..
led zep....the who..grateful dead.........moody blues..donovan...bad company..mountain..janis...new riders....bruce springstein...tom petty...and many more as they played the sf bay area..all live and in person......... i attended the last waltz
every one should be happy that paul and company were willing to let the show be broadcast....

RE: quit your whining
you both seem to get the idea..it was tv show...how else could it be presented in so many places at once...no matter when the camera switched...in the days before mtv or vh1....no regular station would have carried the show..maybe an early pbs station..
the point was these people are dying and starving and there is no need for this to happen...there is too much food and medicine that is wasted daily....
ending poverty and hunger is what 1/4 of The Beatles was singing to the entire world about...he got alot of friends to join him...just like a great sunday really big ed sullivan show....with various acts from around the world on 1 stage...now it is many acts from around the world on many stages at the same time...
singing their heart and souls out....end poverty now..it can be done.....
the 1st live beatles show went to 7 million some odd people in the usa....now look how many people can be reached and sadly tv is still a cheaper product to purchase than a computer !!!!!!!!!!!!!
snap...end poverty now..keep singing along

RE: stop complaining !!!!!
the beatles have been playing live to an audience and broadcasting the show over tv since the 1st ed sullivan show in 1964....it was and is suppose to be a tv show with the interruptions / commercials and camera angles on everybody..how else do you think they can present such a show of so many places ...with out tv...
i grew up before tv was invented...it could have been on the radio with a very waek and fuzzy signal..
it is Beatles and friends playing music over the tv as they have always done...an excellent show...
since most tv people want their best side ..well seems every body got their best side ..all camera angles..even see David Gilmore ..etal up so close you see the sweat...
the live show at each place was the concert...it was broadcast over tv ...hence a tv show...and Paul and all the people know how to do a good tv show of them playing music and being heard clearly..the beatles stopped playing live cause the screams drowned them out..well every body can hear each other now !!!!
6.
poverty is not to be ignored.commercials are
poverty is not to be ignored..the crappy commercials that many of you are unhappy about can be ignored
the cut aways of the musical performances were planned so there was no bootleging of the songs for private profit...
this show was planned to be viewed as it as shown to us....bob geldoff, paul mccartney...spent 6 weeks reheasing and planning all of this...they are rady knew the cut aways were gonna ...you noticed no one performer has commented about the cut aways..just the audience...
bob geldoff presented the concert in a tv show fashion as 1 way for many to view it....i have my vhs ....cause it was on tv..was any one able to record it off their computer and save the to their hard drive...i have a 1st run performance on vhs..........
the passion in all the performers was great...randy jackson on bass with mirah carey..awesome..where was simon????
peace

77. MTV and VH1 did a diservice to the American viewer who wanted to watch the Live 8 telecast. Too much talk, not enough music, cutting off bands in the middle of songs (How could you cut off Pink Floyd!), what a total disgrace. One New York Critic said they ran 40 minutes of commerical every hour and twenty minutes of the show, which ment 5 minutes of the show and 15 minutes of talking VJ's. MTV and VH1 owe Bob Geldoff, Bono and the rest of the Live 8 proformers an apology, as well as the general public who subscribe to their crappy programming. Alas, we will never hear it because Viacom is a corportaion that cares about nothing but money. For shame!

78. MTV used to stand for MUSIC TV. They need to change their name to MONEY TV. They played 3 hours of music, and the rest was commercials and mindless chatter by their "VeeJays". Cutting off the Who, Paul McCartney & Pink Floyd, and then telling us how great they were is unforgiveable.
After about 3 hours, I gave up and turned it off. Sorry Sir Bob, and the rest of the performers. I believe in what you are trying to accomplish, but MTV & VH1 really dropped the ball. MTV did much better in '85 with Live Aid. It's hard to believe it's the same channel. A sorry, sorry excuse for a network calling itself a music channel!

61. I gave up on the MTV non-coverage in about 5 minutes. Whoever said "oh Mariah, just stop"... I was thinking that about the MTV talking heads! Yak, yak, yak... shut up already! And I really don't give a hoot who the spectators want to shout out to.
I didn't know about the AOL feed (or at least its availability to non-AOL users) til just now. I'm watching the ABC program now (how did they bleep Floyd's B.S. but miss The Who's f-bomb? I hear pencils being sharpened at the FCC!) and hope to be able to pull up some recorded stuff from AOL after ABC is over.
I consider myself an AOL basher, and find it really tough to swallow that AOL looks better than MTV/VH1 today...
