You said it, not us: MTV/VH1 sucks
"I totally agree. The MTV broadcast has been a joke. It's a mesh of random clips of parts of songs of various artists with a bunch of random interviews and talking. And I want even start on the f-ing commercials every 10 mins." -- Kristen
"It seems like everything is highly edited and I'm wondering if the performers were told not to mention the US government" -- Elvis of Dallas
"The MTV and VH1 coverage are identical, and pitiful. The sound quality is very poor, and we are seeing way too much of their "reporters" and such ... They completely ignored Sarah McLachlan and did not broadcast it at all. I'm so disappointed." -- JKL
"The BBC is showing everything! Not a single advertisement in sight! The BBC rules! Great piece of socialism seems to have kicked MTV's commercial arse. :D" -- Wai-Tung Leung
"The U.S. MTV/VH1 coverage is horrible...I wouldn't even consider it coverage. It's a commercial fest padded with their personalities jabbering on about God knows what with the bands playing in the background." -- Denise

(Page 2)22. This has had to be the worst coverage I've ever seen. Especially the hype they blasted around this and everything. You'd think they'd really dedicate a day to Live8, un-interrupted and without showing commericals for their 'Sunday Stew' or 28 million commericals for the new 'Fantastic Four' movie. It baffles me that we saw all of Madonna's set with her Kabbalah shit on the background screens, but Pink Floyd got the mighty ol' axe near the end. At the age of 18, I have to say that my generation sucks, and MTV has become what it's become due to my age bracket and what's in "style."
My heart literally sank when I thought for just a second... is that what I think I hear? Yeah, it's 'Rockin' In The Free World', so I thought maybe MTV pulled their head out of their ass and were going to show the legendary Neil Young in Canada. Looks like I was wrong, I had to listen to a horrible cover of it by Maroon 5, just because Maroon 5 are fans of Pearl Jam and PJ has done this particular song before.
Thanks MTV, I thought I might of seen something legendary that I could of told my kids one day, comparing to the original held in 1985. Obviously, I'll have to tell them how it never even held a candle to the original 'Live Aid.'

23. I sent an email to MTV that basically said this: They should change the name of their network from MTV: Music Television to MTV: Blathering Bullshit Television. They obviously do not have enough respect for the music to avoid, again and again, cutting away from historic performances to show us another commercial or another shot of their brain-dead hosts rambling on and showing just how much they were not comprehending what was happening.

25. VH1 totally cut off Pink Floyd right in the middle of "Comfortably Numb". They still had the second guitar solo ahead!! And yet they show Jay-Z uninterrupted. God forbid they interrupt Jay-Z, but the greatest band in the world is cut off in one of their best songs. VH1 pisses me off.

26. I think MTV should give their "M" back. Their coverage of the Live 8 concerts showed that they no longer care about music. They are just another TV station where ads and inane conversation have taken over! Every performance I tried to watch before going to the live web feed was interrupted by mindless “VJ” banter. What a shame!

27. I have no idea why anyone with a computer would have watched the MTV/VH1 coverage. I'm not a big AOL fan, but for the most part they did a superb job yesterday. The updates as to who was playing where could have been more timely, but it's a small complaint. I had two or three screens up all day, and I don't think I missed anything that I wanted to see.
So why did people choose the MTV coverage? It was free online at aolmusic.com.

28. For those of you who commented that the BBC got it right...they did! Full coverage of all performers and no commercials. They also had multichannel that would let you switch to uninterrupted coverage in 4 other locations (US, Rome, Berlin, Eden Point though they may have switched). Part of the difference from 1985 was the improvement of technology and part of it is the grief they caught 20 years ago for their problems (BBC power went out during The Who in 1985) and Geldof not wanting tapes made during the original. BBC also did a pretty good job of having rock reporters - and their interviews always ended before next performer started.

29. I sat watching the Live8 show in Birmingham (England) and we got total music coverage - every note, no interruptions - from Paul McCartney and U2 doing Sgt Pepper right thru to Paul Macca's finale nearly 10 hours later. Once or twice I switched on cable to see what was going on in Philly and got adverts/ vj chatting each and every time, so stopped trying. Later on after the London show had finished the BBC showed stuff from the Philly, Rome, Paris and Johannesburg shows - plus the one from the Eden Centre in England that was made up of African artists. Reading what you guys in the US had to put up with, I can only fear for what might be down the line for us in the UK, because what you guys have now, tends to follow over here. Looks like we need an Advert Free or a Corporate-Free Aid!

30. it was suppose to be a tv show...Snap
it was suppose to be a tv show ..rehearsed..scripted and ready to perform...you all missed the point ..
all the pefomers planned before hand to cut away at the crucial points...so no one...no one is able to bootlegg the show and get the profits...the performers did a tv show and they knew and planned it that away...
even when they cut away during the arp solo of won't get fooled again (which i have seen played lived with moonie in the band...then kenny jones ..then simon phillps...all vesions live...) with out moon playing his incredible outrageous drum parts...a vj talking was as good as anything just the arp solo...the arp is playing all by itsel it is a machine that is triggered...now who is playing to a click track live in front of your face ....
pink floyd was ready to give that perfect performance they gave and show how it was just like playing in the studio and having it viewed....the pink floyd sound was perfect....
the perfomers all rehearsed how this would go down..tv never works with out a script...actually what you are seeing is a stage play(s) from around the world...the actors / performers had their "show" together...
as the audience that i am i am thrilled to be on the audience side of this live direct to you in your face tv shots...of these performers playing their hearts out...what passion
they planned this show for 6 weeks ..i say big hand to all who pulled it off
it still is about some person is dead even as i write this and you read it....very sad indeed..

1 to 1 (of 1)
it was a Paul concert...live to all the world
it was a Beatle..Paul and his many friends all over the world who gave you several live concerts all at one time..just like the 1st ed sullivan show 41 years ago...
even that 1st show had a saturday afternoon dress rehearsal with all the camera angles figured out and cutting to commercial breaks back in 1964..cause it is TV....it runs like a stage play...only the camera sends it to you..
at one point my time of 1:30 pm was in sync with the clock in london showing it was 9:30 pm...exactly 8 hrs difference....my puter was at 9:30 sync also..
since the tv signals were bouncing off the satellites
and being broadcast to me....pink floyd was finished with the 1st song and on the internet feed...they were about 35 seconds behind as my feed came over he phone line...
i saw .... roger waters say thank you twice...within 35 seconds space....that is 11 hungry people.....
be happy paul was willing to get up and do a show for you....and all his and bob geldoff's friend's said lets try it..
the biggest thing at the live-aid event in 1985 was will phil collins arrive from england in time to play with page plant, and jones....he made.....it ...
again i say thank you for a really big show well done

commercials can be ignored...poverty can not
since i am the champion of a beatles show well produced and sent to the wide world via tv...which i have 2 vhs tapes of the entire 8 hours that has such great musical moments i can re-watch it any time without going on line. ...i can pause it...
but best of all...i can fast forward thru the commercials
the trick is to ignore them in the 1st place and never let them get the upper hand ...you can always look away and then come back....
i have done this for years....
commercials can be ignored.
.poverty any where in the world...usa...africa..russian federation....paris...london must not be ignored...
i have been on stage since i have been 14 (i am now 57) playing in bands for a live audience...for the love of music always...
this was a remarkable show ...and i ahve my own vhs copy...only with tv....
poverty can be beaten

that is the point...tv....
it is a stupid tv show...just like all of them...but with out them...most of the world could not connect...or inform each other..or see the beatles play live the 1st time...
the planners of the show knew what tv would do..they planned it ..eveybody knows what tv does it lets you see great things but you always have to put with the crap commercials, etc....it is a planned event...thru the eyes of the camera only...
even the streaming video feed now available on the net...still the net is trying to get a visual picture to each one of us so we can see and learn ...
see and learn....it is teleporting a picture to you...
so is the internet...when the net jams as it does ..cause too much traffic... peple trying to see...
tv is what is no more no less...
.it was a live beatls gig just like the one they played at apple rooftop gig...now where was bbc tv when that event happened ??????????????
snap...too many people are hugry again and still......

no where could any you have seen such close up action of the performers except on exceptional muscial programing that mtv and vh1...

RE: stop complaining !!!!!
i saw early zep as the new yardbirds in college in 1968..
then i saw zep live when they played kansas city, mo the 1st time
i was prepared for the interruption..it was a rehearsed tv show..the cut away was planned for so there no bootleggs made and sold ....
only "live in your face"..."i am there shows" never cut away at the wrong moment....this was tv editing that had been planned so no one could pirate and sell the show / musical performances.
there was no mistake...they had rehearsed this show...every part of it....the cut aways were planned...

31. MTV and VH1 should be ashamed. It was an
embarrassment to watch. I found myself yelling at the tv most of Saturday. After cutting off Stevie Wonder, not even giving The Who the
common courtesy of putting them in the recap, and one of the announcers calling Keith Urban "Keith Herman", I had had enough. The VJ's or whatever they call themselves were a disgrace. Obviously a bunch of giggly smartass "children" who don't know the first
thing about "real" music and giving some respect
to the legends who were there at the beginning. It was for a very good cause, but unfortunately I think that message to a large extent got lost. Very very sad.

32. I love the whole concept of Live 8, but the people at VH1 who directed the telecast should be brought out back and severely beaten.
You DO NOT cut back to your, and I use this term very loosely, talent, when a band like Pink Floyd is on stage. They haven't been together for over 25 years and you decide I need to see your people telling me what I'm watching. The whole direction VH1 took in showing Live 8 (with commericals ??) was just wrong. You missed a lot of really great moments because someone in the control booth was a spastic mess. The Philadelphia show would have been great if you didn't keep cutting from shot to shot to shot without a break. It was borderline cause for a seisure.
I'm hoping the people who organized Live 8 will go through the effort to a) tell Viacom/Vh1 how unhappy their viewers were and b) put the shows out on DVD. It wasn't Live Aid, but could have been with only better television direction.

there was no mistake...they had rehearsed this show...every part of it....the cut aways were planned...”
How does he explain the BBC showing complete uninterrupted performances without ads? His argument that the performances were timed for MTV is further blown away by watching the live internet feeds? MTV’s coverage was about putting their VJs above excellent music and making bad decisions on how to present a live show.

34. i was talking about mtv / vh1 only....that was i received in California...
the tv signal was faster bouncing off the satellites than the internet feed from london during pink floyd's set..is waht i was referring to...
mtv and vh1 need to make corrections and learn how to give the next "live" event correct coverage...but again it is mtv..vh1....
hope fully they have heard all that we have
bitched about....
now it is time to end poverty...as bono stated tonight that a vacine could be gotten to a child in 48 hours time to save his life...that is a starting point...it was reported that a $100 million had been raised !!!!!!!!!!!

35. Bless XM Satellite radio for playing the entire Live8 concert, uninterrupted, with no lame MTV hosts interrupting, oh I don't know, the most significant reunion in rock history in Pink Floyd. I had MTV on with the sound muted, as I listened to XM, because I KNEW that MTV was going to mess up the whole experience. Sure enough, they did. Get a damn clue, MTV...spend the money and at least stick with the ENTIRE Floyd segment. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic, MTV.

36. It reminds me of the US-rebroadcast of the opening of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. Their talking heads obliterated segments and they edited the running order so that sequences were impossible to understand. The final section of the athletes marching in was run against a looped in soundtrack from an omitted earlier part of the broadcast. The total running time, even with much omitted, was longer than the actual event (which thankfully Canadian TV had screened live with minimal interruptions)!!
Another win from corporate america.

38. Yes you can say this but are you definitely sure about that. I think you have to take certain changes that how this will help to others. I am not offending your comment; just I want to give my personal suggestion. As this is the only way to help them. This is the only way to tell other people about that. Hope this will be beneficial for them.

21. Wow I'm quite pleasently surprised to find my comment posted into the article! If I knew I as going to have my comment posted up on the front for loads of people to see, I wouldn't have made my post sounded so smug!
I truely do pity you my American brothers and sisters, such a historic event shouldn't be butchered by advertisements for the sakes of lining someone's already richly lined pockets. We can always hope for a DVD set and hopefully not 20 years later. http://www.live8livedvd.com/
