this was not about you, it was about people helping people - as usual you used it as your platform to promote your channels...

abc put out more music last night from 8-10 then you did in an 8 hour day of music...

get over yourself mtv/vh1 - the last time you were true "music tv was 1990...

i hope families in south africa will be better now...

hopefully a dvd will be created so people can see what they missed and generate more funding for a good cause...

4. Thank god there were other people that felt strongly about this! MTV/VH1 AOL/Time Warner, should be put down! How can you advertise Saab and Cadillac commercials during a concert like this?!?!?! It's absolutely rediculous! From what I gathered yesterday Philly was the only place the concert was held! Thank god I have XM I was able to listen to whomever I wanted to, wherever I wanted to! MTV/VH1 is awful they're not selling a message they are selling an image.

5. Oh come on, people It's MTV. What exactly were you expecting? I'm surprised they even aired some of the acts (especially The Who and Pink Floyd). You absolutely had to know that they'd show their annoying reporters and cram the thing full of the exact same three commercials over and over again.

I hate MTV as much as you guys do, but jeez... you should've all known that would be how MTV would broadcast it, some of you are making it sound like a betrayal. Like I said, I'm surprised they even aired it. I'm glad that they did, but I definitely knew it would be butchered so I always had my computer viewing the stream at the same time so I could switch between the two.

Your brainless cast looked very adorable however, I think the concert was about fighting poverty, not the MTV airhead crew. 8. How How How could MTV/VH-1 do that to Live 8?

Yeah I was around for Live Aid and I might have selective memory but THAT day, as this one, was all about the message and the music. And message certainly wasn't cut off the performers and run commericals or have less than professionals talk nonsense! Geldoff and Bono were in the UK, BBC had complete coverage. Too bad they couldn't have been in Philly running the boards, I bet it would have been ALOT different. I wish those IDIOTS would have to spend some serious time in Africa seeing what is REALLY happening and then maybe, just maybe they would never do this to a broadcast again. Hopefully, in spite of their total ignorance, the message DID get through and we won't need to do it again....

So what an absolute let down to hear about tv coverage this time. All I heard from friends and family who couldn't make it to the show was they couldn't find it or that only clips were being shown. Unless you were willing to sit at your pc and stream broadband on AOL for 6+ hours, you were left out.

MTV/VH1 made it clear where their ideals are. Hopefully a cardinal sin like this will open the door for independent stations that will actually focus on music.

AOL/Time Warner should not be included in this. MTV/VH1 - absolutely. But AOL/TW had the best coverage of Live 8 that I have seen and plenty of others out there agree. THank God I had AOL so that I could watch the shows that MTV/VH1 thought were too boring. Not only did they have the coverage, but even non-AOL subscribers were able to watch the concerts on AOL's page.
Let's remember who we really need to blame.
MTV and VH1 haven't had any real music in years!

13. I for one am not totaly surprised by the lack of coverage by MTV. Dissapointed, but not surprised. This station has gone straight down the tubes, catering to 14 year old girls, in my estimation since the end of Real World season 1. My recomendation is a benefit concert to buy out or shut down the network all together. When was the last time MTV was about the MUSIC? If they insist on game shows or reality shows, why not focus them around music?
I was at the concert in Philly, so I can tell you all that the AOL coverage is absolutely as close as you could get to being at the concert itself. It was really an amazing event. I was in a rush to get home before the show was over to see some aireal shots of the parkway, but I didn't see that on MTV either.
BTW, can MTV get some real VJs? The commentators covering the event were absolutely horrible with Norris being the one exception. Oh yeah, those corespondants have probably never introduced a video in their lives or know much at all, if anything, about the performers they were introducing! Is it me or is Sway annoying as hel?!

it was suppose to be a tv show ..rehearsed..scripted and ready to perform...you all missed the point ..
all the pefomers planned before hand to cut away at the crucial points...so no one...no one is able to bootlegg the show and get the profits...the performers did a tv show and they knew and planned it that away...

even when they cut away during the arp solo of won't get fooled again (which i have seen played lived with moonie in the band...then kenny jones ..then simon phillps...all vesions live...) with out moon playing his incredible outrageous drum parts...a vj talking was as good as anything just the arp solo...the arp is playing all by itsel it is a machine that is triggered...now who is playing to a click track live in front of your face ....
pink floyd was ready to give that perfect performance they gave and show how it was just like playing in the studio and having it viewed....the pink floyd sound was perfect....

the perfomers all rehearsed how this would go down..tv never works with out a script...actually what you are seeing is a stage play(s) from around the world...the actors / performers had their "show" together...

as the audience that i am i am thrilled to be on the audience side of this live direct to you in your face tv shots...of these performers playing their hearts out...what passion

they planned this show for 6 weeks ..i say big hand to all who pulled it off

it still is about some person is dead even as i write this and you read it....very sad indeed..

it was a Paul concert...live to all the world




it was a Beatle..Paul and his many friends all over the world who gave you several live concerts all at one time..just like the 1st ed sullivan show 41 years ago...
even that 1st show had a saturday afternoon dress rehearsal with all the camera angles figured out and cutting to commercial breaks back in 1964..cause it is TV....it runs like a stage play...only the camera sends it to you..

at one point my time of 1:30 pm was in sync with the clock in london showing it was 9:30 pm...exactly 8 hrs difference....my puter was at 9:30 sync also..

since the tv signals were bouncing off the satellites
and being broadcast to me....pink floyd was finished with the 1st song and on the internet feed...they were about 35 seconds behind as my feed came over he phone line...

i saw .... roger waters say thank you twice...within 35 seconds space....that is 11 hungry people.....

be happy paul was willing to get up and do a show for you....and all his and bob geldoff's friend's said lets try it..

the biggest thing at the live-aid event in 1985 was will phil collins arrive from england in time to play with page plant, and jones....he made.....it ...

again i say thank you for a really big show well done

commercials can be ignored...poverty can not

since i am the champion of a beatles show well produced and sent to the wide world via tv...which i have 2 vhs tapes of the entire 8 hours that has such great musical moments i can re-watch it any time without going on line. ...i can pause it...
but best of all...i can fast forward thru the commercials

the trick is to ignore them in the 1st place and never let them get the upper hand ...you can always look away and then come back....

i have done this for years....

commercials can be ignored.
.poverty any where in the world...usa...africa..russian federation....paris...london must not be ignored...

i have been on stage since i have been 14 (i am now 57) playing in bands for a live audience...for the love of music always...

this was a remarkable show ...and i ahve my own vhs copy...only with tv....

it is a stupid tv show...just like all of them...but with out them...most of the world could not connect...or inform each other..or see the beatles play live the 1st time...
the planners of the show knew what tv would do..they planned it ..eveybody knows what tv does it lets you see great things but you always have to put with the crap commercials, etc....it is a planned event...thru the eyes of the camera only...

even the streaming video feed now available on the net...still the net is trying to get a visual picture to each one of us so we can see and learn ...

see and learn....it is teleporting a picture to you...
so is the internet...when the net jams as it does ..cause too much traffic... peple trying to see...

tv is what is no more no less...

.it was a live beatls gig just like the one they played at apple rooftop gig...now where was bbc tv when that event happened ??????????????

where but on my tv was i able to hear and see david gilmore's inspired guitar playing...see the shimmer of lights of cymbals...get a behind or over head shot of many of the drummers playing..even if only briefly...you all miss the great advances that made all this possible...the sound and camera angles all so well timed....and clear as a big ben's bell...
no where could any you have seen such close up action of the performers except on exceptional muscial programing that mtv and vh1...

remember the you were suppose to be interrupted !!!!

i saw early zep as the new yardbirds in college in 1968..
then i saw zep live when they played kansas city, mo the 1st time

i was prepared for the interruption..it was a rehearsed tv show..the cut away was planned for so there no bootleggs made and sold ....

only "live in your face"..."i am there shows" never cut away at the wrong moment....this was tv editing that had been planned so no one could pirate and sell the show / musical performances.

there was no mistake...they had rehearsed this show...every part of it....the cut aways were planned...

quite true...i have worked many a charity show as a drummer and and drum tech..my latest gig was a show for kids at risk,,,with sammy hagar, mickey hart, night ranger and so on
the timing of the show is important..the rehearsals create great performances.....how else could the sound be so pure.....

the commercials were a dis-service...tv should try to operate with out them but they can't ...

20 years "live Aid" on mtv was a great leap and they pulled off...

to me it was about poverty...it was jolting any one of us out a "comfortably numb" frame of mind about the poverty in the world...as americans we have such short attention spans..why do you think we shoved the same 2 ford commercials 45 seconds apart...

the uncomfortable feeling of the commercial interruption was saying some one is working here even the janitor..he deserves to paid....

they interruptions were to make us remember ..some number of people are dead of hunger...in the pink floyd show..how many 3 seconds went by...

the show was free ...why are any of you complaining..you are letting the freaking commercials jerk your chains..ignore them..ignore them...

bam...wake up....you can't be comfortably numb while people are dying..

A Really Big Show ala Ed Sullivan...

Sir Paul and his mates Ringo, John, and George and all the professional people there.
Gave all of you "A Really Big Show"..as Ed Sullivan was fond of saying..
if you wanted to see the music you had to be there..
mtv and vh1 did a great job of getting sight and sound (an exceptional good sound mix) to us who could not attend...all the mixing and editing great job.

this is about raising awarness that people in the world starve every day for no reason..that some one is afraid to give food, medicine, shelter to help another fellow human being on the planet

this is about raising awareness...the people who put this show rehearsed for hours....plaanned for several weeks..

Give them a hand for "A really Big Show"..very well done!!!!!!!!!!
i will pay to download a performance since the money seems to go to get food and medicine for the people in Africa...

you both seem to get the idea..it was tv show...how else could it be presented in so many places at once...no matter when the camera switched...in the days before mtv or vh1....no regular station would have carried the show..maybe an early pbs station..
the point was these people are dying and starving and there is no need for this to happen...there is too much food and medicine that is wasted daily....

ending poverty and hunger is what 1/4 of The Beatles was singing to the entire world about...he got alot of friends to join him...just like a great sunday really big ed sullivan show....with various acts from around the world on 1 stage...now it is many acts from around the world on many stages at the same time...

the 1st live beatles show went to 7 million some odd people in the usa....now look how many people can be reached and sadly tv is still a cheaper product to purchase than a computer !!!!!!!!!!!!!

the beatles have been playing live to an audience and broadcasting the show over tv since the 1st ed sullivan show in 1964....it was and is suppose to be a tv show with the interruptions / commercials and camera angles on everybody..how else do you think they can present such a show of so many places ...with out tv...
i grew up before tv was invented...it could have been on the radio with a very waek and fuzzy signal..
it is Beatles and friends playing music over the tv as they have always done...an excellent show...

since most tv people want their best side ..well seems every body got their best side ..all camera angles..even see David Gilmore ..etal up so close you see the sweat...

the live show at each place was the concert...it was broadcast over tv ...hence a tv show...and Paul and all the people know how to do a good tv show of them playing music and being heard clearly..the beatles stopped playing live cause the screams drowned them out..well every body can hear each other now !!!!

the cut aways of the musical performances were planned so there was no bootleging of the songs for private profit...

this show was planned to be viewed as it as shown to us....bob geldoff, paul mccartney...spent 6 weeks reheasing and planning all of this...they are rady knew the cut aways were gonna ...you noticed no one performer has commented about the cut aways..just the audience...

bob geldoff presented the concert in a tv show fashion as 1 way for many to view it....i have my vhs ....cause it was on tv..was any one able to record it off their computer and save the to their hard drive...i have a 1st run performance on vhs..........

the passion in all the performers was great...randy jackson on bass with mirah carey..awesome..where was simon????

many farmers and tobacco growers in the usa could start growing food for rhe African people as well as every body..
instead of paying farmers not to ...pay them to grow food the world....then the farmers are back in business

since cigarettes cause cancer and so does second hand smoke...i am recovering as a bladder cancer survivor of 8 months...so what and why does any body grow a product that kills people...they could grow food to make the people live and not die..........

it is really up to the artists to explain why they did what they did....i just know from working on shows and how the concert for george was so well prepared that i got a great show even with an edited tv version over pbs..that still had a
commercials for other pbs show /programs..


over 3 billion people saw this on tv....no where else...my computer screen feed was this little picture..with tv i had 19 inches of screen

18. Similar problem with CTV in Canada, I'm afraid. Decent focus on music at Canadian show, not too asinine commentary (but obligatory band interviews after sets, most artists saying relatively mundane things, some with sincerity, some, perhaps not, but no names named here) and frequent commercials which at least make you remember that you have it pretty good in the first world. This sounds like a horrific disappointment by MTV/VH1, though... maybe AOL Time Warner (which I guess owns all of it) WANTED viewers to be online, leaving commercials for the viewing masses. Some corporate strategy effort... but it is disappointing. The writer who notes how MTV did it in 1985 is correct, and the box set of the 1985 Live Aid DVDs pays hommage to MTV and how it participated.
